Operation Christmas Child: Great After-Christmas Bargains for Next Year’s Boxes!

It’s never too early to shop for next year’s Operation Christmas Child gifts. In fact, now is a great time, thanks to the after-Christmas sales. This rack at Target had toys for little ones and even a few things for older children, like cute socks and hair accessories. Have you found any good deals for your shoeboxes already?

MOPS Meeting Review: Shepherding Your Children

We hope you had a good time connecting with other moms at our MOPS meeting on Nov 13. Thanks to Stefanie’s and Sara M.’s groups for providing the brunch! We gave away some fantastic door prizes to Pigtails and Crewcuts – Virginia Beach and the Chilled Ponds Ice Skating Rink. Also, we had our first raffle of the year for a gift certificate for Joe Corbi’s Direct food sales.

Mentor Moment

Mentor Mom Melene started our meeting by sharing Deuteronomy 6:6-8 and a few words about taking the opportunities to train our children at all times.

Shepherding Your Child

Sara M. introduced our special guest Denise H., who presented her ideas about “shepherding” your children, including:

  • Know them – Get to know your child’s temperament, patterns, love language, talents, skills, and desires for their futures.
  • Grow them – Guide them through P.E.A.R. – Principles, Examples, Application, and Rewards. Also, through building their personal character and through teaching them God’s character.
  • Show them – Guide them through daily skill building in the home (cleaning, manners, healthy living, etc) and on the job (sports, building/crafts, work, service, etc).
  • Throw them – Into the Lord’s care by praying daily, memorizing verses, and allowing God to work in your child’s life rather than intervening in every circumstance.

Thanks to Denise for providing fabulous handouts for the moms to keep. The handout included an outline of her ideas, tools we can use to get to know our children, and instructions to work on various character traits with our children. She also recommended the book “Praying Circles Around Your Children,” by Mark Batterson.

Operation Christmas Child

Thanks to all the families who donated gift boxes for Operation Christmas Child. Our members brought more than 50 boxes to add to the collection for Bethel Baptist Church. These gifts will provide joy and hope to needy children across the globe and, most importantly, the children who receive them will know that they are special and loved by God. Thanks again to Dr. Mark Levin and the team at We Make Smiles for donating toothbrushes and toothpaste for our boxes! Also, a big thanks to our Mentor Moms who stayed after the meeting to pack up and deliver the boxes to Bethel’s offices.

Our Next Meeting – Nov 27

Our next meeting is Nov 27 and we’ll be having a “Half-Day Craft Day.” Kelly’s Vivacious Violets and Kristina & Yvonne’s Radiant Reds tables have brunch/clean-up duty. Please look for the event invitation to be posted on our private Facebook group. See you there!

Meeting Review: “Embrace Your Story – Giftedness”

We hope you enjoyed the MOPS meeting on Oct 9. Thanks to Kristina and Yvonne’s Radiant Reds, and Kelly’s Vivacious Violets for providing the brunch! It was so abundant and delicious, we had to add a few new recipes on our Pinterest boards. We gave away some yummy door prize items, too –  a free Papa John’s pizza and vouchers for snacks from McDonald’s and Chick-Fil-A.

Mentor Moment

This meeting was all about giftedness. Mentor Mom Donna started the meeting with Proverbs 2:2-3. She shared that Solomon was asked specifically by God to request anything he wanted. He chose wisdom, because he knew that with wisdom everything else in life would come.

Operation Christmas Child

Next, Sara M. showed a video from Samaritan’s Purse about Operation Christmas Child.  Free boxes are available at our MOPS meetings. Sara invited every member to take a box to fill for a child this year. Sara displayed a sample gift box for a 10-14 year old boy, the group that receives the least gifts.

Then, she shared the great news that We Make Smiles Pediatric Dentistry & Orthodontics has donated supplies for our boxes this year! (Check out this awesome stash of toothbrushes and toothpaste!)

Guest Speaker – Pat

Our guest speaker for this meeting was our former Mentor Mom Pat, who spoke about gifted children. Pat shared common misconceptions about giftedness, various types of giftedness, and how to recognize giftedness in your child.

A Gift for Moms

Also, each mom received a “gift” from MOPS – a bookmark featuring this image from the Growing a Jeweled Rose blog.

Our Next Meeting – Oct 23

Our next meeting is on Oct 23. The topic is “A Beautiful Mess – Caught Up in the Business of Life?” Lara’s Outrageous Oranges and Laura’s Glamorous Golds have brunch/cleanup duty.

“We Make Smiles” Helps MOPS Make Smiles through Operation Christmas Child

We would like to thank Dr. Mark S. Levin, Practice Manager Kathy Galante, and everyone at We Make Smiles Children’s Dentistry & Orthodontics for their generous donation of toothbrushes and toothpaste for our Operation Christmas Child boxes! We asked and they came through to make sure children around the world will find a toothbrush in their gift boxes this year.
